What’s on in September and October

Autumn is turning into a bumper season of exhibitions and events to take an edge off the end of summer gloom. Take part in an Underworld extravaganza, listen to some of the finest voices from graphic novel, enjoy Jeffrey Archer’s private collection, see some of John Burningham’s finest works and cast your eye over some of the Bodleian’s finest treasures.

This Saturday Tate Collective presents a day of the dark. the sublime and the underground with free art workshops, music and live performance.

A lively programme of events and activities will be running throughout the day; learn to screen print, take part in a giant drawing, make badges,  enjoy a shadow puppet show, watch free BFI film screenings and enjoy a ‘Raw Tour’ of John Martin’s new exhibition.

BD & Comics Passion Festival

7 – 9th October

In association with Comica Festival. Institut Francais have invited some of the most popular British, American, French and Belgian authors for a weekend of graphic novel events and talks.

Over the course of three days enthusiasts and beginners alike are invited to participate in an exciting array of events with acclaimed authors and artists such as Dave Gibbons (Watchmen), Jean-Claude Mézières (Valérian and Laureline), China Miéville (Kraken),Audrey Niffenegger (The Time Traveler’s Wife), Bryan Talbot (Grandville), Yves Sente and André Juillard (Blake and Mortimer), Benoît Sokal (Canardo), Catel & Bocquet (Kiki) and comics guru Paul Gravett amongst others.

Images of Power: From the Jeffrey Archer Political Cartoon Collection

3rd September – 30th October

Monnow Valley Arts Centre

The Monnow Valley Arts Centre is pleased to present Jeffrey Archer’s private collection of political illustration. Lord Archer has been keenly collecting political cartoons for 25 years and this is the first time that any part of the collection has been shown in public.

On display are works from Gillray, Rowlandson, Sir David Low, Ernest Shepherd, Max Beerbohm, Gerald Scarfe, Peter Brookes, Sir John Tenniel, Trog, Michael Cummings and Ralph Steadman. The exhibition promises a satirical look at political life through the ages.

John Burningham: An Illustrated Journey

The Fleming Collection is showing a retrospective exhibition of one of Britain’s most distinguished and best-loved illustrators John Burningham.

 

The exhibition celebrates the rich and varied career of Burningham and includes his iconic London Transport posters, illustrations and working drawings for his children’s and adults books as well as those for Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang by Ian Fleming and previously unseen archive material.

Treasures of the Bodleian

30 September – 23 December
Broad Street, Oxford OX1 3BG

A spectacular exhibition of some of the rarest and most evocative treasures from the Bodleian Library.

On display will be objects from ancient papyri through to medieval oriental manuscripts to twentieth-century printed books and ephemera. Other items include the Magna Carta, Handel’s conducting copy of Messiah, Shakespeare’s First Folio, one of the earliest medieval illustrated manuscripts of Dante’s The Divine Comedy, hand-written drafts of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein , Kafka’s The Metamorphosis and an illustrated medieval Arabic manuscript.

Members of the public are invited to give their thoughts on which of the library’s treasures should be put on permanent display.
