Our chosen building in the King’s Cross regeneration area is ideally located on a site mixing commercial, cultural and leisure activities, with the capital’s best transport links for local, national and international visitors.

As a home for the past, present and future of illustration, we will be a place where people can enjoy a changing programme of exhibitions, have a go at creating their own illustrations – and have a good cup of coffee!

From the general public to the world’s professional illustrators, and from children and young people to students of illustration, our feasibility study shows that we will attract 120,000 people every year.

The King’s Cross regeneration area

Located in the Borough of Camden, this 67 acre brownfield site, one of Europe’s largest developments, will create 8 million sq ft of mixed use, 2,000 new homes and apartments, 25 acres of public space, 4.9 million sq ft of office space and 500,000 sq ft of retail opportunities. Work has begun on the site. You can see some of the construction images here.

On the site there are 20 historic buildings and structures and the House of Illustration will occupy one of these; an existing 12,000 sq ft Victorian building called Regeneration House.

Our neighbours will include Central St Martins School of Art (part of University of the Arts London) which is due to open in Autumn 2011. You can see their plans here and live progress on their site here. Once open, there will be 6,500 staff and students on site. We will also be close to Kings Place, the Guardian and Observer which has its own gallery, the British Library and the Wellcome Collection.
