About the course:

Illustrating Places is a ten week course that will guide you through various ways of depicting different places and environments. Through a series of short lectures, demonstrations and engaging activities you will learn about different drawing systems that are used to illustrate places.

This will include using perspective and an exploration of other systems such as isometric (as used in video games and Japanese printmaking) and vertical oblique (as used in Persian miniatures and cubist painting).

The course encompasses a range of techniques for depicting architecture and nature, interior and outdoor spaces, working from photographic reference and your imagination, and on location.

A fun, hands-on course, it is designed to be accessible, useful and supportive. It includes opportunities to experiment with a range of media including drawing, collage, watercolour and gouache painting. We will also look at and take inspiration from the work of a variety of illustrators and the methods they employ to successfully create their worlds.

The course will suit anyone with some experience of drawing and image making recently or in the past, whether professionally or purely personally but who wishes to gain much more experience and understanding of this particular area and is open to experimenting and exploring different ways of doing it.
