Comics in the Curriculum for KS3

Using comics to develop core Key Stage 3 English skills.

Comics aren’t just about superheroes – they’re a varied and complex art form and these free downloadable resources use them to teach core KS3 English skills like critical analysis and descriptive language techniques.

Introduction to Comics

A presentation giving an overview of the medium of comics and introducing different comic genres.

Panel to Page

A presentation demonstrating the mechanics of comics and how these relate to KS3 writing techniques, with an optional short critical writing activity.

Starter Activities

Three 5-10 minute exercises to build confidence in drawing for later in the lesson.

Collaborative Comics

A 20-30 minute activity focused on generating ideas, working in sequence and introducing the concept of visual storytelling.

Flutter Books

A lesson using reading comprehension and critical analysis skills to break a story down into key narrative moments. This activity can be applied to any text you may be studying or used with a creative writing task.

Creating Memory Comics

A lesson using vocabulary and descriptive writing techniques to make a comic about a specific memory, with a step-by-step worksheet and variations for less able students.

Reading List

A suggested reading list of graphic novels and comics for interested KS3 students to pursue in their spare time.
